I really like that blood splatter in panel 1. It’s some great foreshadowing, bringing up a lot of questions about the magician’s past, lots of intrigue.
Though I have to agree with Aero about backgrounds. I too, hate drawing the backgrounds–I’m super lazy and don’t find them as interesting as drawing the characters. But one or two backgrounds every so often would help to ground the characters. It seems like Redvale is a coastal town, so maybe some shots of the ocean every so often, or a nice establishing shot at the beginning of a scene. I do that a lot–one big view of the city where the characters are really helps to give readers a sense of where they are. After that, you can cheat a little and do less backgrounds.

Hrrrr you’re right. In the later chapters it gets a bit better, but it’s definitely up there on the list of artistic weaknesses.

  • Yeah, backgrounds are a pain. Sometimes they can be just as much a character as the people in it. But, still a pain. :)
